2000 -- Electronic broadcasting will take a major step forward in Kosovo this week with
the inauguration of the Kosovo Terrestrial Transmission Network.
On Friday, 15 December, the OSCE Mission in Kosovo will participate in two
ribbon-cutting ceremonies and acknowledge the major donations which helped to reconstruct
the broadcasting network.
At 10:00 a.m., on Pristina Hill (known as "Lagja e Vneshtave"), a
ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the official opening of a reconstructed Kosovo
Terrestrial Transmission Network (KTTN).
The reconstruction was made possible through financial assistance from the United States,
Japan, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), OSCE and KFOR.
Those attending the ceremony include U.S. Ambassador James W. Pardew, Principal Deputy
Special Advisor to the President and the Secretary of State for the Development of
Democracy in the Balkans; Mr. Craig Buck, Director of USAID in Kosovo; Japanese Ambassador
Noriaki Owada, Mr. Masato Watanabe Director of Central and Eastern European Division
for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr. John Sharp, Project Manager for KTTN.
At 4:00 p.m. at the RTK Studio in Pristina, UNDP Co-ordinator Paolo Lembo, the Japanese
delegation, European Broadcasting Union General Director Jean-Bernard Muench, and OSCE
Head of Mission, Ambassador Daan Everts, will inaugurate the new RTK studio facilities as
well as the new television programme schedules.
The network will transmit throughout Kosovo television programs originating from Radio
Television Kosovo (RTK), Koha Vision and RTV-21. Before the end of December, four radio
channels will also broadcast over the terrestrial network: two RTK radio frequencies,
RTV-21 and Radio Dukagjini. These four broadcasters were awarded licences for radio
broadcasting on 11 December.
